Reserva wines get a year in oak and minimum two years in bottle while the region's finest wines, Rioja Gran Reserva, cannot be released until they have undergone five years ageing, two of which will be in oak.

Over eighteen months in mixed French and American oak barrels, the wine gradually develops its trademark smoothness and complexity, furthered by spending eighteen months in bottle prior to release. The wine was then transferred to mixed oak barrels with American staves and French tops where it was aged for 9 months.

Nearly every red wine from Rioja and the Ribero del Duero uses Tempranillo as the heart of their blended wines, and in Portugal, as Tinto Roriz, it is a key component of the fortified Port blend.
