About this deal

It took a while to figure out the noises/soundtrack and to wait after pushing the button for him to start moving. I’m interested in incorporating the Code-a-Pillar into a growing inventory of tangible tech devices that I use to teach coding and robotics concepts to young children through hands-on, collaborative, and developmentally appropriate activities.

My 5 year old used the Sticklebricks to build an obstacle course, with a bridge and some alien barriers. Code-a-Pillar, a new STEM toy, inspires young students to develop critical thinking skills through a hands-on robotic caterpillar. Planning and Sequencing: After twisting the segments a few times, kids will discover that if they plan a path and twist the dials to create the right sequence, they can get Code-a-pillar Twist™ to follow their plan! I removed the batteries and opened up the main section of the device by unscrewing the four silver screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

One straight (forward arrow) move segment will make the caterpillar travel forward one yard (approx 92cm). We're advocates of the creative use of technology, but this needs to be balanced with developing physical skills such as papercraft, woodwork, clay modelling, technical drawing and soldering.

This could be a potential disaster in an early childhood classroom, especially among children with sensory issues. Once the segments are connected and the start button is pressed, the Code-a-Pillar will take the programmed route specified by the young user, a similar concept to coding. Critical Thinking: By programming different combinations to send Code-a-pillar Twist™ down various paths, preschoolers can try and try again, exercising those critical thinking skills!

Roby the mBot Meccano robot dog is one of our popular projects and has been with us to lots of events. But I was able to identify the blue wire that connects the speaker to the main device and I simply snipped that wire. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). If you are looking for additional Coding Products and robots for this age group check out Blue Bots and Bee Bots. At Tech Age Kids we believe Coding is a new literacy and children need to understand how technology works, practice making skills and grow in their curiosity to make a better future for us all.

Just pass that blue wire through a potentiometer and pass the dial outside of the body, or hide it inside somewhere. Here’s a photo from the top looking down so you can get a better view of the coding commands on each section. We're pleased to see big toy manufacturers recognize the importance of teaching young kids coding concepts.
