Glen Scotia’s whisky is shaped by its coastal climate, and whether real or just the result of a dram too many, mermaid sightings along our coast are an unnervingly reoccurring theme, especially in the 1800’s when distilling in town was growing to new heights. This expression has the classic Campbeltown notes, maritime sea salt spray, apple and pear, with the influence of rich spicy fruit notes from the PX casks. Glen Scotia is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in the historic whisky-producing region of Campbeltown, located on the Kintyre Peninsula.

Once there were up to thirty distilleries now Glen Scotia is one of only three currently in operation. Working with Joel, we uncovered the story of John McIsaac’s (also referenced as M’Isaac’s) mermaid sighting, and his eerily detailed description that was supported by other community members.The distillery was awarded Scotland's Distillery of the Year 2021 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2021. Alongside Springbank and Glengyle, it is one of only three remaining distilleries in Campbeltown and draws its water from the nearby Crosshill Loch. The signature nose has hints of vanilla oak, interwoven with the subtle notes of sea spray and spicy aromatic fruits. I'd never even heard of the Campbeltown malt region until a late-night whisky wikipedia wander alerted me to its presence.Water slightly dismantles the different elements, but adds some dried mint before a deep, dark finish.
