About this deal

The light under my mother’s bedroom door – a light that promptly darkened upon my return from a late night out – never failed to intensely irritate me as a young man. Years later, now a parent home at night imagining the dangers awaiting my own children, I have begun to understand my mother’s behaviour.

Ratchets up psychological suspense with a cleverly constructed plot that can be devoured in one go’ Sydney Morning Herald Authors, if you are a member of the Goodreads Author Program, you can edit information about your own books. Find out how in this guide. As the third wave of the virus hits, all inhabitants of Melbourne are given until 8 pm to get to their homes. Wherever they are when the curfew begins, they must live for four weeks and stay within five kilometres of. When Lou’s son, Samuel, doesn’t arrive home by nightfall, she begins to panic. While JP Pomare’s style of writing bears no resemblance to that of the great Agatha Christie, the way that this plot is constructed does recall some of Christie’s more engaging characteristics. Of course, Christie largely wrote detective stories and Home Before Night features neither detectives nor police. But here, as in classic Christie style, there are only a few characters involved in the plot and when all is revealed, what seemed implausible, unlikely or exaggerated is seen to be totally logical. It would take a genius to guess what has really been going on. As the third wave of the virus hits, all inhabitants of Melbourne are given until 8pm to get to their homes. A real ‘Do as I say, not as I do’. Draws you into this great tale with the likable Lou, but then it’s constantly changing, consistently intriguing, and rivetingly unpredictable. Lisa, WA, 5 Stars I always get a giddy feeling when I see a new J.P. Pomare novel. One of the best in the business in the crime and thriller category of fiction, I was just a tad excited to read Home Before Night. A story that was first released as an Audible exclusive, this latest Pomare offering is fast paced, incredibly twisted and oh so tense. It was a sprint from the start to the finish line with this one.

If so, author interviews are Books are amazing to read - escapism at its best. But, do you ever wonder how the author wrote it or what inspired it? Home Before Night is JP Pomare’s sixth novel and, like the author’s previous books, it contains at its heart a dark secret. Lou and Marko are driving home from an engagement party. Marko is driving, clearly too drunk to be doing so, and an accident occurs involving a cyclist. They leave the scene – abandoning the victim – and together swear never to speak of the accident again. But the strain of maintaining the secret ultimately proves too much for their relationship and the marriage fails. Books are amazing to read - escapism at its best. But, do you ever wonder how the author wrote it or what inspired it?A lean and terrifying thriller about a mother’s desperate search for her missing son during a pandemic. Trust us, you’ll devour it in one sitting!’ Woman’s Day J.P. Pomare has given us another juicy small-town read . . . Expect plenty of twists and turns in this thriller' WOMAN'S DAY My weird foibles aside*…. one of the things I found eerie about this was that it was set in the throes of Covid. (Well, an increasing worse spread of Covid.) I know we are still in the midst of the pandemic – as someone who only got it for the first time a month ago – but it was a bit surreal. Like reading books in the height of Covid that didn’t reference it at all. Or masks. Or social distancing.

It takes a special kind of genius to create twisty, thrilling novels that can be read in a single satisfying sitting’ Good Reading Magazine The pay-off is criminally good . . . As always, Pomare keeps the best surprises until last. Prepare for a late night' SYDNEY MORNING HERALD Wow! What a read this book was. I really enjoyed the well-written storyline that is tied to events that have occurred in the not-so-distant past. This makes it realistic for the readers of today and threads a believable story web throughout the book. The central characters of Lou and Marko are compelling in the way they stumble through a broken relationship with the bitterness from past experiences and events. It certainly kept me enthralled right to the end and I would recommend it to any lovers of modern Australian crime fiction. Gillian, QLD, 5 StarsDeftly plotted, pacey and sharply written. Twists come out of nowhere and the high drama of the final few chapters is edge-of-the-seat stuff' New Zealand Women's Weekly Once again J.P. Pomare has delivered an engaging and addictive thriller! Home Before Night is set during the Covid pandemic in Melbourne. During the third wave of the virus everyone is given till 8pm to get home. Lou’s son Samuel has gone missing, he hasn’t returned home, she can’t reach him and she begins to panic! With a fair plot, the revelations are moderate and the cast is underdeveloped, it just doesn’t hit the mark for me. This was my first J.P. Pomare book but it definitely won’t be my last. This book was very hard to put down, as I really wanted to know what happened next. I found all of the characters very unlikable but I think it helped with the plot and the general feel of the story. Meg, SA, 4 Stars Thanks is extended to Hachette Australia for providing a free copy of this book for review purposes.
