About this deal

In short, it's a good read, with 33 games from Chernev's time or before (remember this book was written in the 50s). There is no mention of what format is being used so going on "Look Inside" view you will be disappointed if you are expected algebraic version. The book itself is a great read and Chernev does well to explain each move without harping on about similar moves as the book progresses. In school, you could get a great mark without reading every single word in the textbook; same with chess books. In some situations a pawn in front of castled king gets moved and he's like "what a terrible move, don't violate the king's safety!

My instruction has been: this book, the ChessMaster game academy tutorial by Joshua Waitzkin, a lot of youtube videos from Ben Finegold and commentary on games by other players. Chernev had a good point, but personally this 'fixation' with not moving pawns in front of castled king held me back for a while. The book is clearly for Beginners and suffers a little bit from using old example games (and I really mean old! I remember someone pointing out that the era the games are from makes them easier to umderstand than some more modern games. The content in this book - the descriptions, the explanations, the way the passion of the author is exciting to read and demonstrated with each move - is fantastic.

giving advice from previous grand masters and teaching you how a grand-master thinks and what should be done to prevent mistakes. In many ways, it would a wonderful 'first' book (or first 'serious' book, after the ones which teach the rules and elementary mates, for example), and a nice gift for a young player just taking up chess. Chernev's writing style is something I enjoy also and overall I would recommend this book to anyone who still commonly uses and reads Descriptive(English) Notation. There are two remarkable promotions of Pawns, and a third in the offing, before White decides to capitulate. When you "look inside" a book and see algebraic notation, what you expect is to get a book with algebraic notation. At first I was going through every variation on my head (I'm lazy to do it on the board and I thought it might help my concentration), but now I'm actually just moving the pieces and reading the commentary, just ignoring the variations. I could not have been more stupid in ignoring this book so long, not to mention being wrong about all of the above. The book was first published in 1957 so expect a game or two by Capablanca, Tarrasch, Rubenstein and Maroczy.
