About this deal

It plays a strong parallel to the sides of stories from everyday women today society would have us overlook, too, and it’s powerful. There was something so unique about this collection and I love that the author included her illustrations and art work. You may think this therefore moves away from the encouragement readers might be looking for to help them move past their own pain, but it doesn’t, or from the lyrical beauty of a heart-felt or raw piece which readers can relate to, but it doesn’t. Similar to the witch doesn't burn in this one by amanda lovelace and You'll Come Back to Yourself by Michaela Angemeer, this collection of short powerful poems from Instagram and TikTok poet Trista Mateer will have you believing in the possibility of your own healing. I think maybe I lack the background knowledge of the scenarios which were at the times of classical poets or I also lack the classical vocab too.

I was a little horrified at an earlier review that said it came across as generic feminist poetry as I actually found this to be quite the opposite. Literature degree, but I’ve come to realise that I don’t hate poetry, it’s just a matter of finding the words that sing to you. This book is perfect for anyone struggling with their own healing process and anyone trying to find meaning to their own life. There are multiple images throughout which felt a little juvenile – they genuinely looked like images captured from google with clip art attached, or were images with poignant quotes on which you’d often see scrolling along your chosen social media platform.A sequel novel, The Scarlet Veil, featuring vampires also released recently and I'm looking forward to checking it out. In response to these representations, the poet presents the reader with a powerful goddess, who knows her own mind and who is very angry. I appreciated how the different themes were dealt with and also the artwork that was included among the poems. Aphrodite Made Me Do It is a feminist poetry collection about love, loss, insecurity, pain, and empowerment.

It’s worship and blasphemy, anger and heartache, capped off with tenderness and self-love and learning to cherish yourself no matter how many people in your life have failed to do so. I feel like I come out of most poetry/prose collections with generally the same thoughts and feelings. I received a free ARC of this book, with thanks to the author, Central Avenue Publishing and NetGalley. I have not read as much as some book nerds, so I'm not overly concerned with things like whether or not the lines rhyme. Couldn’t even bother trying to comprehend it all together—that I could be bloody and beautiful, that I could be divine and approachable. She rails at the way that popular culture has represented her as a sexualised, unintellectual being. Each section (obviously) has its own themes and tones, and speaks to the reader on a different level. I really appreciated that, despite this being Aphrodite inspired, the author didn’t allow love or romance to be the biggest part of her story – she actually says as much in a few of her poems. Bestselling and Goodreads Choice Award winning poet Trista Mateer pulls out some tarot cards and asks for help in her goddess inspired poetry collection, Aphrodite Made Me Do It . Gradually, the poet (and the goddess) moves from righteous anger and grief to acceptance, forgiveness and a strength to move forward into a more hopeful future, both individually and as a species.
