About this deal

Playing well you can ensure you don’t overpay for what you keep and you can get the most for the tiles you do lose. In the end, the player with the best kingdom, not the richest player, becomes the sovereign of the island. It still is a very smooth and light game, so do not worry if you are a beginner in board games: I'd say this game is for casual players and advanced players looking for something non-complex, alike. The box alread includes the family friendly Druid expansion, the Tunnel tiles mini expansion, as well as the brand new Boderlands Module mini expansion and offers hours and hours of gameplay. The mental rotation gap is mitigated in games like Carcassonne by playing on a central board, one tile at a time.

I originally bought Isle of Skye because it looked similar to Castles of Mad King Ludwig, a game I enjoyed a lot but had trouble getting to the table because of its over-an-hour playtime.

Published in 2015, my playing group and I have already encountered and played a long list of new games. I have taken the time above to explain these key mechanics because they are in my opinion what makes this game really impressive. The second expansion brings some new key-points into the game; it enhances the game to be better, but still brings out the original experience from the core box itself. But if the money scoring condition is on the table, players might be more frugal, trying to earn the points it provides. If you like the laid back, tile laying aspects of Carcasonne but want something that takes this in a new direction then Isle of Skye is probably right up your street. To begin, place one scoring tile on each of the windows on the game board, and place the round marker on the board. Andy Matthews, in a review for Meeple Mountain, states that the game has simple mechanics with a "colorful and detailed" design that is "clever and well balanced". Additionally, the player board becomes like an engine, making it a new element to consider in the Isle of Skye.

Trying to pick a flaw within the game, I would point to the tiles that score bonuses for other resources on the tile – the player that gets these multipliers is often the winner.I played at five players with all new people and towards the end, we all felt the game was outstaying its welcome, but this is less of a problem for experienced players. It’s the economy as defined by the collaboratively constructed scoring that is the heart of the game. Because the timing and scoring conditions change with each game, even though the kind of decisions players make is similar from game to game, each game still feels distinct. It’s a profoundly safe design – an iteration over the proven tile-laying formula of Carcassonne with an extra dollop of interesting game mechanics ladled onto the top.
