Illustrated this year by artist Whooli Chen, this beautifully designed pocket book is ideal to carry around in your day bag for reference, to while away a few minutes or as an indispensable guide with literally everything you could need to know about each month and how the seasons affect them. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. For younger bookworms – and nostalgic older ones too – there’s the Slightly Foxed Cubs series, in which we’ve reissued a number of classic nature and historical novels. A total compendium for 2023 providing information about the moon cycle, the sea temperature, zodiac information and some seasonal recipes fitting with the holidays next year. My garden is tiny but I am learning all the time for when I have a larger garden to turn into a sanctuary for all living creatures to enjoy the natural cycles of the seasons.

This is a fabulous little book that I adored picking through and if you are a fan of nature, the natural world and planning for gardening, then this is a gorgeous book to have. You will find yourself referring to The Almanac all year long, revisiting it again and again, and looking forward to the next edition as the year draws to a close. The illustrations by Whooli Chen are beautiful and I couldn’t decide if they would have been even better in colour or whether that would detract from their exquisite subtlety. This is a beautiful little hardback with lots of information, for those in Britain and Ireland, about the changing seasons, moon phases, gardening, the night sky and the natural world. It is beautifully laid out with clear printing of the information, and illustrations of the tables – of tide times (with how to work it out for each locality at the start of the book) and phases of the moon. With delicate illustrations by Whooli Chen, this beautiful book presents a month-by-month guide to engaging with the seasons in Britain and Ireland. It would make a lovely Christmas present, particularly for anyone interested in astrology and astronomy, and a helpful guide to tasks and events season by season. Having adopted our first dog over 4 years ago, I found myself starting to appreciate how our local area changes over the year in terms of the natural world on our daily dog walks. This little gem would make a beautiful gift for anyone but particularly gardeners and those who enjoy nature or stargazing. Each sign of the Zodiac is explained in their given month including categories such as plantary symbol, associated planet, element, colour and characteristics.

Every month there are records of heavenly activity, locations of planets and the best time to spot such things in the sky. And, threaded through the book, are in-depth insights to the cycle of a garden pond throughout the year. But the author does encourage you to look at what is happening outside, are there buds or bees starting to emerge. Written in an accessible style with some super smattering of humour in a conversational tone, readers will find recipes and songs, notable dates and traditions, the zodiac and gardens so that there’s everything from the seas to the skies contained here. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. This year's focus has been the zodiac but not as a horoscope, but more as the what and why of each month. The book is easy to use as the pages have been sprayed on the corner and then gradually work down so it is easy to see at a glance roughly where you need to be. We know how wonderful it feels deep down inside when we experience a breathtaking sunset, or a magnificent Dawn Chorus, or the colours in the skly when the Sun goes down at the end of the day.

Mrs Woolf, wife of the manager, is a very celebrated author and, in her own way, more important than Galsworthy. Lia Leendertz’s The Almanac - A Seasonal Guide to 2023 is an inspiring tool for reconnecting with nature’s cycles in practical ways that propagate soulful results. Each month covers topics such as moon phases, sea temperatures, sunset and sunrise times and nature. Arranged by months, this book reflects a seasonal journey through the year from January through to December.I loved reading this each month and have already been given a copy of next years book, so I'm looking forward to seeing what this has to offer as my companion through 2024. Either way, they add a lightness of touch that balances the stark and effective tide tables or phases of the moon.

Leendertz’s writing is just lovely (see below) and I’ve appreciated the relevant recipes and folk songs each month. The Almanac: A Seasonal Guide to 2023 reinvents the tradition of the rural almanac for a new audience. There are also features on each month’s unique nature, with this instalment following the swirling micro world of the garden pond through the year.As such, it’s the perfect gift for gardeners and nature-lovers, and a great way to inject natural goodness to your day-to-day life. A little peek here and there led me to reading the book fully but I’ll still be reading it each month, as it’s honestly such an adorable book. This I will follow through the year as I always do, and this year especially the fabulous seasonal recipes, folk songs and exactly when to do things in the garden through each Moon quarter of the month.
