About this deal

A sequel to Elysium Fire, it is the eighth novel set in the Revelation Space universe, and the third in the A Prefect Dreyfus Emergency spinoff series.

The Prefects are the cops of the Glitter Band, the ring of artificial environments orbiting a planet in the Epsilon Eridani solar system. A mix of hard science with space opera, big ideas, and again characters that readers want to know more about. Prefect Tom Dreyfus is on his way and along with him his once archenemy Aurora, who has formed an uneasy alliance with him to each other’s benefit. You don’t need to have read the previous books – enough of the backstories are given along the way to explain to newcomers – but those who have read the previous novels will appreciate what happens more. Others may feel the problems to be of greater severity, but unlike the previous books there wasn't anything here that lessened my enjoyment. It wasn’t a great resolution, not even as good as the rest of the book, but acceptable all things considered. These characters seem real and lived in, with lives outside their jobs, different ways of approaching problems, and each other. Machine Vendetta is the third book in the Prefect Dreyfus Emergency series featuring a officer of the law for a system of floating city states that orbit the planet Yellowstone, and the enemy that wants to destroy everything including Tom Dreyfus. I’d recommend this series if you want a little more detective sci-fi and not quite as hard sci-fi as his other stuff.

A fitting end to the Dreyfus trilogy, and maybe the closest we get to a happy ending for a Reynolds book? It's almost entirely a straightforward investigation going from place to place and talking with people.A prefect who happens to be a hyperpig (an uplifted pig functioning alongside humans) has apparently betrayed his office and staged a suicide attack on one habitat. Prematurely writing this review because I started it on Netgalley without realizing that it is the 3rd book of a series. As his colleagues pick up the pieces following her death, Prefect Tom Dreyfus must face his conscience.

Clarke Award; Revelation Space, Absolution Gap, Diamond Dogs, and Century Rain were shortlisted for the British Science Fiction Award, and Chasm City won the British Science Fiction Award. In my spare time I am a very keen runner, and I also enjoying hill-walking, birdwatching, horse-riding, guitar and model-making. About halfway through the book, the storyline takes a sharp turn and concentrates on the interaction between Creature and the demigod Aurora. Also Judge Dredd like, in that these are slightly more militaristic police units, but with an appreciation of the law, unlike the Judges.I dare say you could read it as a stand alone it is so easily managed but the full experience is all three (Aurora Rising, Elysium Fire). Banks, I really appreciated the aspect of sophisticated agents using high technology, intelligence, and courage to "do the right thing". As Tench’s mentor and friend, Tom Dreyfus is brought in to investigate her death and the events leading up to it - What was the reason for the trip?
