About this deal

Being an employee at Wal-Mart now for almost three years I knew this is a book I wanted to read. I also enjoy reading books about companies especially if the author is the founder. Wal-Mart's story is a fantastic story of America's free enterprise. I will tell you that some of the things revealed in the book about employees were either not correct or they have changed through the years. I know for a fact that many have changed and I think Sam Walton would not be happy about some of the changes. To help you understand was an amazing success story Wal-Mart is I have included a quote from the book below: Sam Walton really was one of the great business leaders of the last century. I had no idea that he had started Walmart well into his 40's. Makes me feel young, just when I was starting to feel old in my career.

With the new Bentonville "Five and Dime" opening for business, and 220 miles away, a year left on the lease in Newport, the money-strapped young Walton had to learn to delegate responsibility. The Walmart cheer, two cashiers at the front of the store and the fact that Walmart employees are to this day called “associates He also grasped here a fundamental truth: if he treated his employees well, they’d treat his customers well. Walton’s business values and principles are succinctly described in Chapter 17, where he shares his 10 rules to build a successful business. These rules form the core of Walton’s business philosophy, and they are reflected in many of the book’s earlier chapters. The rules are:

Although many have applauded his business mind and the Walton Family’s philanthropic endeavors, Wal-Mart has also been criticized for enforcing bad labor practices and driving out mom-and-pop shops and wreaking environmental havoc due to the size of the stores. But the retail giant it was to become got its start in Walton’s humble goal of making goods more affordable to rural America. He was never married to procedure, only to values and concepts. He accepted changes to his operations as necessary, but the driver to those changes was his overall vision and values, which never faltered. Fred Meijer, West Michigan billionaire grocery magnate, dies at 91". MLive.com. November 26, 2011. Archived from the original on April 10, 2018 . Retrieved November 26, 2011. Scott, Roy Vernon; Vance, Sandra Stringer (1994). Wal-Mart: A History of Sam Walton's Retail Phenomenon. ISBN 0-8057-9833-1.

This philosophy continued throughout his career. When Walton opened his 18th Walmart in 1969, its low prices, long opening hours and free parking were all reasons customers continued to be drawn to it.

But, as Walton saw it, it wasn’t his fault that local competition is put out of business when a Walmart comes to town. After all, the customers are free to choose where to shop, and if they choose Walmart, it must be because they feel their needs are better met there than at local stores. Marquard, W. H. (2007). Embrace change: Sam Walton was always looking for ways to improve his business. He was willing to try new things and take risks, even if it meant making mistakes. He encouraged his employees to do the same and to always be looking for ways to improve.Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 2009-10-29 20:51:25 Bookplateleaf 0004 Boxid IA105815 Boxid_2 CH115201 Camera Canon 5D City New York Donor
