About this deal

It makes sense that one of the most popular running shoes in Singapore is one that isn’t built for speed: the Asics Nimbus 23. The ASICS GEL-NIMBUS™ is one of the world’s most trusted running shoes, it has built the confidence of millions of runners all over the world and is highly recommended by running experts. With its superior comfort and quality thanks to its use of ASICS GEL™ technology, the GEL-NIMBUS™ is a long-distance running shoe that offers maximum cushioning and bounce, thanks to a range of ASICS performance technology. I still think the Triumph 18 is the overall better shoe because it’s more durable and I didn’t get any foot fatigue in it. Asics claims that the Nimbus 23 has been updated to be more stable and have smoother ride transitions than the Nimbus 22. It was also designed to have softer GEL cushioning and more heel compression. I enjoyed the Nimbus 23 most on relaxed runs at paces above 5.30 per kilometre while middle distances between 10 and 20 kilometres are in the Nimbus 23’s wheelhouse.

When it comes to stability, even though the Nimbus 23 is a neutral trainer, I found it to be decently stable due to its midsole which flares outwards and creates a wide base. It’s not the softest ride of any max cushioned trainer by any means: the Clifton 7 is still softer but the Clifton has a more uniform softness throughout its entire midsole. It looks sleeker than the Triumph 18, more agile than the chunky Clifton 7 and fancier than the plain Jane Glycerin 18. The ASICS GEL-NIMBUS™ range is the leading cushioning running shoe for neutral runners. From your first stride to your last, the lightweight cushioning and new improved fit provide lasting comfort you can rely on.This is not always true and I’ve been proved wrong by the likes of the Hoka Arahi 6. Not here though. The Gel Nimbus 24 has lots of gaps between its 3.8mm outsole which will undoubtedly cause wear to the midsole foam underneath. I recently reviewed the Vomero 15 and I was disappointed with it because of its firm forefoot which didn’t feel like a max-cushioned trainer.

In the midsole there are two layers of Asics’s new Flytefoam Blast+ (FF Blast+) foam, which is a softer and springier version of the material used in the Novablast line of shoes. The top layer of the foam is firmer than the bottom, which combines with a plastic Trusstic plate in the midfoot to ensure the ride of the shoe is stable despite the introduction of the new soft foam. The women’s version of the shoe has a softer top layer of FF Blast+ and the plastic plate is a different shape tailored to women’s feet. At 10.9 oz, the Nimbus 23 is not a lightweight trainer but I don’t really mind its weight because it’s designed for easy and recovery runs which is where the shoe shines. The wide-fitting upper is made from an engineered mesh with a gusseted tongue that has a nice stretch and drops nicely into place. Together with good padding in the heel and flat laces, it all combines to make it a very comfortable shoe to slip on. You’re also getting a pretty roomy toe box and it felt like a good fit for us in our UK size 8. The Nimbus 24 provides an enjoyable and reasonably bouncy ride for daily training, yet it falls in between what I look for in a trainer: not comfortable enough to use on recovery days and not versatile enough to be a good workout or even tempo shoe.I did take them out on a 40km run but by the halfway mark, I felt some foot fatigue due to the softness of the midsole. I know a lot of people feel differently about this, so please insert your own opinion here: I don’t like exposed midsoles because they can reduce durability. Then you get other trainers which change significantly with each update. The Nimbus is an example of the latter. The trend of the Nimbus over the past 3 years is that it receives massive updates and gets substantially better upgrades every year. The ASICS Gel Nimbus 24 is a daily runner that has the midsole to take you all the way up to marathon distance. Aimed at runners with neutral pronation this is a daily workhorse that’s fast enough for tempo days and comfy enough for recovery runs. Who should NOT buy the shoe
