About this deal

It is a solid and tested product that can drive RGB, RGBW or single colour LED strips and other constant voltage LED products. DMX512-A uses a single pair of conductors, so can be connected using the cheaper 3-pin XLR connectors. Some manufacturers made units with three-pin XLR connectors, because of their lower cost. However, as 3-pin XLRs are commonly used for connecting microphones and sound mixing consoles, there is a risk of wrongly connecting DMX512 equipment to microphones and other sound equipment. The +48 volt phantom power emitted by mixing consoles could damage DMX512 equipment if connected to it. The DMX512 signals emitted by lighting desks can damage microphones and other sound equipment if connected to it. As a result, the best practice is to use only 5-pin XLRs for DMX512 signals, to avoid risk of confusion with connectors used for sound signals. DMX 512 is not the only type of lighting control system in existence. DMX was a revolutionary step forward from analog, but these systems have their own disadvantages as well. The biggest downside to using DMX512 is that it has a limited amount of channels – for example, if you want to use more than 256 colors then you will need two cables and split up your palette between them. Digital Multiplex can also be expensive because every device needs its own receiver/transmitter combo which are sometimes sold separately rather than being included with the product itself. Having recently explored a USB adapter circuit to convert to serial (also known as a USB to 'universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter' bridge) intended to connect computers via USB to serial interfaces, I was curious to examine interesting serial protocols so we can create our own open source hardware and software. So, I explored the standard music interface, MIDI, with the CP2102N to have my music keyboard to act as a synth under control from the computer. Next I wanted to examine lighting. DMX is hardly an obscure protocol but I struggled to find good examples online of it. It is one thing to look at the protocol documentation, but another thing to examine implementations. Manufacturers sometime do things subtly differently, rendering some things inoperable with each other, or performing sub-optimally. Since microcontrollers and other logic devices usually just have single-ended logic levels referenced to 0V, a device known as a RS-485 Transceiver is used to interface between the microcontroller (3.3V or 5V logic) and the RS-485 world which has the three-wire method outlined. Example RS-485 transceivers are MAX485 MAX485 and ADM485 ADM485 ; these are low-cost non-isolated transceivers but for a robust design suitable for use across buildings and large premises, fully isolated RS-485 transceivers must be used (and it is mandatory according to the DMX specification for the input side to be fully isolated but be careful, don't assume all products will have isolation!).
