With only 20 buildings from all sectors shortlisted and an in-person visit by a judge for each one, making the shortlist is a huge achievement for the whole team. For me personally, seeing the results from my efforts in writing the competitive awards entries is very rewarding. B&K Hybrid Solutions is part of the Heage-based construction giant Bowmer & Kirkland Group which started life as a steel fabricator and now also designs large-scale timber structures.

The new NMIS headquarters pushes the boundaries for the application of engineered timber, creating a BREEAM Outstanding, inspirational learning environment with a unique structural identity. The Wood Awards is the UK’s premier competition for excellence in architecture and product design in wood. The elite independent judging panel not only judges all submitted entries but also visits the shortlisted projects in person, making the Wood Awards a uniquely rigorous competition. Established in 1971, the Wood Awards recognises, encourages and promotes outstanding wood design, craftsmanship and installation. Emissions range from 38g/km to 41g/km, with fuel economy up to 176.6mpg and an all-electric range of around 30 miles. Another key stat is the boot space of 615 litres – enough for a family holiday. To be one of only 20 buildings shortlisted at the Wood Awards is an achievement in itself, and testament to all the hard work that has gone into the design, delivery and submission for NMIS up to this point.

Aiming to promote collaborative working, sustainability and innovation, the facility’s design maximises the technical and aesthetic capabilities of engineered timber, creating an advanced two-storey structure that is carbon neutral and optimised for productivity. A ‘B’ mode for the eCVT automatic gearbox offers increased regenerative braking to charge the batteries, and can be fine-tuned by using the steering wheel-mounted paddles. The design for Fife College is class leading with regards to its operational energy performance and is therefore being used as a Pathfinder project, with a strong focus on also diverting as much of the construction waste from landfill as possible. Every aspect of the new campus has been designed with learners in mind and is being carefully created to give students the best experience and facilities for their course. The new College is taking a fabric first approach and once complete will bring together around 4,500 school pupils and college students.
