About this deal

Considering the film speed, grain is not objectionable at all, and the 42-megapixel resolution of my Sony DSLR ‘scanner’ easily showed good film detail, the failings of my hand-held exposures, and the faults of my 80’s vintage zoom lens on the first roll. I would caution making any guesses about the characteristics of the emulsion until a real data sheet with color curves is released by Fujifilm. There are too many digital variables from my camera to your computer screen. All film was graciously developed by Lomography Gallery Store in NYC. I highly encourage you to give it a visit. Tech Specs Ease of Use Portra, as you might expect from the name, is ideal for portrait photography. It’s a low-contrast film though you can increase the saturation and contrast with overexposure. The colors aren’t vibrant enough to suit landscape photography or even cityscapes since the images have a pastel tint, but that feature makes portraits look incredibly flattering. I like the exactness of XP2 over HP5 PLUS, which I found to be quite “foggy.” I especially like XP2 to render directional light for portraits, and I’m happy overall that I switched from HP5 to XP2 so soon in my workflow. I like to find what works for me and then continue to make it work for me until I can use it in all areas. I experienced this when working on my compositional style, and hope that my experience with film is no different.

Beyond the specific color tones, the overall richness of the colors in the Fuji Superia 400 is impressive. Even when I took photos in low light, the colors looked vibrant and bright. However, it seemed like the film produced the best results with natural or bright light conditions. Fuji Superia 400 in Various Photographic Contexts I’ve had some unclear results at 1600, but this could be because of poor exposure overall. I have seen other photographers produce useable results at this ISO, so I’m still willing to experiment, but so far I haven’t been happy with any of my extreme low light images. It was from those special images that I really came to know the power of film as a photographic medium. I came into film photography thinking that I’d get some quirky, old-school looking images that I’d enjoy for a moment or two. Instead, I came away with a deep appreciation for the power and potential of analog, and today I realize that Superia may just be the perfect film for leading new shooters into the vast, colorful world of film photography. caption width=1024 align=aligncenter] Nikon FE – AI-S Nikkor 35mm 1:2.8 – Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400 @ ASA-400 – Processing By: Burlington Camera Nikon FE – AI-S Nikkor 35mm 1:2.8 – Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400 @ ASA-400 – Processing By: Burlington Camera Nikon FE – AI-S Nikkor 35mm 1:2.8 – Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400 @ ASA-400 – Processing By: Burlington Camera Nikon FE – AI-S Nikkor 35mm 1:2.8 – Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400 @ ASA-400 – Processing By: Burlington Camera Portra 400 on the other hand, is there for when you need to take really good, high quality pictures. It’s ideal for portrait, editorial work, landscape and a lot of things in between. Are They Worth It?This was a really interesting comparison for me. Fuji Superia does have quite a lot going for it, much more than I gave it credit for.

For everyone else, you’ll want to do your own research. Superia, on the other hand, produces vibrant colors for landscape photography, especially in ideal natural light settings. It’s not as favorable with portraits since it tends to add a pink hue to the skin, requiring some tweaks in Photoshop. Fuji Superia 400 vs. Agfa Vista 400: A Battle of the 400s I have gotten to love, after 65 years in the darkroom (starting with my father’s when I was little), the hybrid workflow. I sold my enlarger when I moved a few years ago and I don’t regret it one bit. Develop, scan, improve. And, convert to monochrome if I want to, and still have color shots for those that need it. My hypothesis, given all facts, was that the two films would be identical apart from the rebate text. Laying the two film strips on a lightbox as seen in the above image, this certainly seemed to be the case. On direct visual inspection they look the same to me.

Though most sources, including Wikipedia , categorize Superia as a consumer/amateur-oriented film, it’s built on the same technology as one of the most sought-after colour emulsions: Natura 1600 .
