Mit dem Baby Bottle hat es ein zweites Blue-Mikrofon in den Test geschafft und eröffnet mit einem Preis von 308,- Euro (Baby Bottle SL: 369,- Euro) unsere Mittelklasse. Wie auch beim Bluebird ist das Design unverwechselbar, die Korpusfarbe wurde allerdings mit Schwarz dezenter gewählt. Das sE 4400a ist beileibe kein schlechtes Mikro, wie mein alter Test schon aufgezeigt hat, für Gesang wird es aber sicher nie zu meinen Favoriten zählen. The handy 100Hz bass cut filter also means that you can reduce the proximity effect and cut out any "rumbling" that can occur with movement of air when a mic is placed close to an instrument or sound source. This is also a big help when recording outdoors or in a windy environment.

Unexpectedly I haven't found much use for them on cabs (guitar and bass), i was never too happy with them on a double bass and they are not my first choice for classical guitars and brass instruments.

For example, the sE4400a is easy to position so its capsule is just peeking over the top of the rim of a snare drum. Speaking of the capsule, it's based on a retuned version of the capsule in the SE2200A (I wish SE Electronics were consistent with capitalization of their product names), which I consider one of the best values in microphones; I use it more often than mics in my closet that cost ten times as much. In direct comparison to the SE2200A (Tape Op #48), the sE4400a in cardioid mode brings out significantly more of the snare drum's punch whether up close, at medium distances, or placed far. I can hear much more resonance of the drum's body. There is perceivably less of the actual snare wires coming through, no matter how I angle the mic, but also less of the undesirable "spit". Hypercardioid and figure-8 modes are useful for rejecting high-hat bleed, but of course, polar-response selection also affects how much room and "floor" (reflection of the snare from the floor -or in my case, a clipboard lying flat on the rug below the snare) the mic captures. While the microphone is excellent for all sorts of classical guitars, rooms, and playing styles, a decent preamp is sometimes needed to get the best sound out of this microphone. The microphone also can sound a bit stiff in smaller rooms. But if you already own it's Austrian grandparent, or any other all-rounder, or a mic you are using to record clean and play with the sound in post-production (lo-fi, dirt, tube fx…) my advice would be, go look elsewhere.The sE Electronic SE8 is a small diaphragm condenser microphone perfect for miking up a classical guitar. The microphone sounds sweet, with a relatively flat, natural response for an overall natural sound reproduction, with extreme realism. The microphone is also surprisingly forgiving without sacrificing any detail or depth.
