About this deal

In fact, that is probably the ideal use, because it’s heavy enough to pose a problem getting up and down stairs if used at home, as well as taking up a lot of space and making a fairly industrial noise. You wouldn’t choose it for cooling your bedroom at night, but it’s the only one we reviewed that can stand a chance of cooling a 40 square-metre space. Once connected, the app covers all of the basics. In Fan mode, you can adjust the speed, in increments from one to 10. Switch to Heat mode and you get four options, plus you can set a target temperature, too. Both heating and cooling modes support oscillation – and the sleep timer, which you can set in one-hour increments up to 24 hours.

Both heating and cooling modes support Natural mode, which apparently adjusts fan speed up and down to make air feel more like a natural breeze. In reality, I remain unconvinced that such modes feel any better to the Standard mode, which uses a constant fan speed. The Tristar is light, stands knee-high and is easy to move around on its casters or with the built-in carry handle, making it a decent air cooler to keep in a cupboard, ready to wheel out when a heatwave strikes. I measured power consumption at a maximum of 1983kW on Heat mode (in fan-only mode, power consumption topped out at just 28.8W). Given the average cost of electricity in the UK (18.9p per kWh), this means that the Princess Smart Heating and Cooling Tower will cost a maximum of 37.48p per hour to run. Note that next to central heating, all electric heaters are comparatively expensive to run. A handy, if not a little basic, app offers a greater degree of control than a standard fan heater, and there’s a remote control, too. Decent performance in both cooling and heating modes makes this an effective product even in larger rooms. Design

Dehumidifier Mode - When in dehumidifier mode, up to 1 litre of water is extracted per hour, equivalent to 24 litres per day. This of course depends on the humidity of the room. Such a high extraction rate is ideal for rooms with extreme damp, condensation and moisture issues. All the fans on our list rotate to some extent, but the models with greater ranges of motion can help improve the comfort of several people at once. For a living room, try the Dyson Purifier Cool Auto React, which rotates just shy of 360 degrees. Weight One of our go-to brands for vacuums, it’s not surprising that Dyson impressed, earning another top spot here. This dedicated fan (and purifier) was easy to set up and its controls were responsive; rather than lagging, it turns on instantly with the remote. It’s moveable too, thanks to a lightweight yet stable design.

Dyson’s latest fan has claimed our top spot thanks to its outstanding range of air speeds, which helped our testers feel comfortable in hot conditions. They found it easy to use, and praised the versatile design that also acts as an air purifier and humidifier – an effective feature on test, which will come in handy if you find fans quite drying.
