About this deal

p. 95 How does somebody get to the point where their brain stops functioning, like a normal brain? That their reality completely breaks from the reality that every person in the world lives in? Amy Brenner is a medical student and just recently went through a breakup with her boyfriend, Cameron. Although she would have preferred to not be assigned to Ward D, it was a terrific way for her to earn extra credit and to take her mind off of her breakup. This was a fast paced where-is-this-all-going read! Freida McFadden has written another thrilling book. Plus, the narrator of the audiobook did a terrific job, and I did not want to stop listening. But I have to remember that I am talking to a man with paranoid schizophrenia. A man who has been hearing voices."

Despite its few shortcomings, Freida McFadden’s writing style remains a highlight of “Ward D.” Her ability to craft engaging prose and weave intricate plotlines is commendable. The book maintains a fast pace throughout, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The characters are well-developed and their interactions contribute to the unique atmosphere of the ward. debo admitir que leerlo de noche NO FUE BUENA IDEA, porque me cagué de miedo en muchas partes. dejando eso de lado, leí este libro demasiado rápido. algo que admiro de freida, es su capacidad para engancharme en la primera página y mantenerme pegada hasta el fin. Two out of two books by McFadden and I'm seeing a pattern with her MCs in both of the books I read, the other being "The Inmate". I feel the leading ladies are a bit dense despite the one here is a med student. Amy's insensitive IMO to refer patients as "crazy", really? I understand if the bad characters say that but not from the MC. There was no jaw-dropping twist for me this time. That’s all you’ll get from me about the plot/storyline. Anything else could be a spoiler, and no spoilers allowed here!

Terrible and harmful representation of mental illness. Missed opportunity... DNF after reading 'crazy'/some other negative bullshit too many times. Liars fidget. The tone of their voice or speech patterns changes. Liars offer too much information, babbling on with excessive detail to convince themselves or others of what they are saying.” It felt like such a negative representation of mental illnesses from how Amy described them, she did not sound professional at all. For example, she described patients as “crazy” and people who have lost their mind. How are you? The three most useless words in the universe of communication. Nobody who asks that question wants to know the answer. And nobody who answers ever tells the truth. “I’m fine, Paige.”

While Ward D excels in many aspects, it falls short in its portrayal of mental health. Some readers may feel that the representation of mental health issues is stigmatizing. The negative portrayal of the illnesses represented raises concerns about perpetuating harmful stereotypes. Additionally, the overuse of the word “crazy” and the suggestion that all mentally ill individuals are inherently violent further reinforces these stereotypes. It is important for authors to approach such sensitive topics with caution and ensure that they do not contribute to the stigmatization of mental health conditions. Special thanks to Freda McFadden, NetGalley, and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing the Advance Reader Copy of Ward D. This review is my honest and personal opinion.

Some readers may find the plot too far-fetched and unrealistic, especially those with experience in mental health care. after all, if you meet someone who is truly mentally ill, that’s the only way to know that you’re sane.”The below links contain discussion questions for my books.
