The aforementioned Grammar of Design, by renowned Taro Tanaka, is at the heart of the Grand Seiko history. Looks-wise, the Seiko 5 SNK805 has a very military look. Underneath a flat Hardlex mineral crystal, the dial takes on a bit of a mini German B-Uhr guise with the minutes taking on greater importance than the hours. The hands are bold lumed affairs and the second’s hand is arrow-tipped with lume as well. Everything here is printed, albeit in a nice way, aside from the old “5” logo that sits below 12:00. Honestly, for such an entry-level watch, the design is super clean and pretty hard to dislike. It shows us that low price mechanical watches do not have to be cheap-looking. It also shows us that seriously expensive watches can often learn a thing or two about design. Most of the time,field watchesare quartz. After all, they were created to be read on the field. It has 21 jewels between its gears and a 41-hour power reserve. No, the jewels aren’t real. They’re synthetic. They’re placed between gears to reduce friction. The more present, the more accurate your watch would be. 21 is a standard amount.

I just would not expect it to look the part if you are out on the town. Its dial is dark green while its hour markers are white. The contrast lets you read them easily. The watch has 2 rings marking the hours passed. One of them reads the time in a 24-hour format while the other reads it in a 12-hour standard. Having military time available is expected as field watches were made for soliders.The watch is not as bulky as a diver’s watch, but it is not as dressy as a dress watch.
